  • Choose an insurance company that provides you with resources to learn about different coverage options
  • Look for a company that can offer low rates but still give you great coverage
  • Make sure the company has a privacy policy and won’t share your information without your permission unless required by law.
  • Don’t choose a company that hides behind big legal terms and seems to be trying to scam you.
  • Read reviews about insurance companies online to get a better idea of how they treat their customers
  • Call the insurance company’s customer service hotline to find out how helpful they are with their customers and potential customers
  • Don’t go with an insurance agency that you have never heard of or one that you didn’t apply for; getting a phone call or email with an “insurance agency” asking for your personal information could be a scam.

Pennsylvania Car Insurance: The Basics

Posted: under Uncategorized.
Tags:

It doesn’t matter where you live, it is important to drive with car insurance. Auto insurance makes sure that you can afford to pay for damages to your vehicle if it is in an accident, replace your vehicle if it is stolen, or pay punitive damages to another person or property if you are in an accident. Like most other states, Pennsylvania car insurance is required by law if you want to operate your vehicle. This is so that you and other people on the road are protected from accidents.

The law requires that Pennsylvania car insurance provide a minimum coverage amount of:

  • $15,000 / $30,000 limit Bodily Injury Liability
  • $5,000 limit Property Damage Liability
  • $5,000 (PIP) First Party Benefits

Basically, in order to legally operate your vehicle in the state of Pennsylvania, you need to have insurance that provides at least this much coverage. Of course, you can always opt for more, which is usually recommended. In this case, Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage is typically the first to be added on. This is, basically, a supplement to your own coverage so that if you are injured and need medical attention, you can get it even if the other responsible party does not have enough insurance to take care of you.

Bodily Injury Liability provides protection in the event that you or someone else is injured in an accident. This could be from two cars striking each other on the road or you lose control of your vehicle and it hits a pedestrian. Pennsylvania car insurance requires that you have this coverage so that if you are responsible for an accident where bodily injury is the result, you will be able to pay for damages. This could include medical costs for the hospital stay, follow-up consultations with a doctor, medical or surgical procedures, and medications or prescriptions that might have been prescribed as the result of the accident.

The Property Damage Liability stipulation of Pennsylvania car insurance provides the same benefits as Bodily Injury, but is assessed to damage to physical property. When a driver hits your car, for whatever reason, your car will be damaged. Their insurance policy will assess the amount of money it will cost to repair the damages and pay you for it. This might also apply to other forms of vehicles like motorcycles, trucks, and even bicycles. It can also apply to stationary property like your home, detached garage, or shed. It can even apply to other personal property that could have been damaged or destroyed in an accident, such as things you might be hauling in your trunk like a stroller, cooler, or shopping bags with grocery items.

Pennsylvania car insurance Personal Injury Protection, or “PIP,” also helps to pay for “reasonable and necessary” medical expenses for you and your passengers. Bodily Injury Liability only covers the driver and passenger of the other vehicle involved with the accident. This aspect of your policy ensures that you and your passengers can cover the potential expenses of hospitalization and other medical attention you might need too.

Rising Car Insurance Prices in Pennsylvania

Posted: under Uncategorized.

Companies taking more rate increases….can you believe it?  If car insurance prices in pennsylvania are ever going to stabilize it seems like something huge is going to have to happen.  Well…that something huge might just be on the way. I’ll get to that in a minute. Right now you should be aware of those companies who have asked the state for a rate increase and will be jacking up their customers rates on their next renewal. If you have insurance with one of these companies…be prepared.

Liberty Mutual   +7.3%   effective August 1

USAA +7.0%   effective  July 31st

Nationwide Affinity  +5.0%  effective July 4th  (how patriotic!)

Another Nationwide  +4/6%  effective July 4th

Pennsylvania National   +6.0%  effective June 1st

More to follow on who’s raising rates soon….

Of course you don’t know what I’m talking about…very few would know. Good thing for you is that I am one Erie Insurance agent with “loose lips” …especially when it comes to good news for you!

Turns out that Erie Insurance has released a new program in several states that will allow clients to “lock in” their auto insurance rates indefinitely. Can you believe it ? Well I couldn’t either…but it’s true. Yes there are some fine print items that will need to be addressed but overall I think it’s going to be a great opportunity.  Some of the fine print says that when you get a new car…the rate must change. Come on now…you have to agree that one makes some sense.   You change your address and your rate can change…then you just lock it in again. Areas like philly and bigger cities have higher rates because claims are higher in those areas…that makes sense. And….adding a new driver can affect the rates as well.  So…there you have the fine print…the worst case scenario..and it’s really not too bad. Honestly, I actually expected much more fine print than that.  More details on rate protection for pennsylvania drivers will be announced in the next several months so stay tuned and we’ll fill you in on all the details and the actual rollout date.

When can you get rate protection in pennsylvania ?  Even the card reader couldn’t tell me the answer to that one !  But I do know it’s sitting there just waiting to be rolled out.

Tell you what I’ll do…you leave me a note at dan@williams-agency.net and I’ll put you on my priority callback list and will let you know the “minute” I get word that rate protection is available here in pennsylvania. Then we’ll see what it takes to get you better insurance at much lower prices and get you up and running.

April in Bradford, Pa….Ice Fishing Secrets

Posted: under Uncategorized.

sierrasfish 300x225 April in Bradford, Pa....Ice Fishing Secrets

Okay….we lost the “worst weather” city a few days ago to Fargo, ND ….So I checked the weather in Fargo today…46 degrees and sunshine.  In Bradford….well it’s been snowing off and on since I got up around 5:30 so…hmmmm…who Wins again ?

We might not be ice fishing in Bradford this week…but it gave me a chance to show off my daughter’s nice big brook trout she got through the ice this winter. Wonder if Fargo can produce brook trout this size ?  One thing’s for sure…I wouldn’t trade my time here in Bradford for anything. We get to see a true changing of the seasons and some of the most breath taking scenery in the country.

Hey, it’s car insurance season for the next several months so it’ll be crazy in this office.  As one of the long time Erie insurance agents I’ve seen this business changing dramatically the past several years. “Is it changing for the better”? you might ask …. I wish I could answer that with a definitive answer. Unfortunately, the answer is….it depends on who you are. What I mean is that if you are a great credit risk, can earn a good insurance profile score you will think it’s changed for the better because your rates have decreased dramatically. If you “are” all of those things and your rates haven’t dropped, you really need to let us shop around for you and show you the options available.  What’s a good insurance profile ? Sorry…HIPPA rules forbid me to know all that stuff ? Credit score ?  ummmm  we can check that when you contact us for a rate quote.
