According to the laws in Pennsylvania there are guidelines set up that may protect you from getting your insurance cancelled unfairly. Then again, they may also verify that your cancellation is legitimate. I’ve listed a few common situations we run across daily. These may affect you auto insurance in pennsylvania.

Getting a DUI, passing a school bus, a license suspension or revocation are all automatic cancellations from most preferred insurers. Unless you’ve got your insurance with a specialty substandard carrier like Progressive or Mercury you’re likely to be cancelled for these types of situations. A suspended license will get you cancelled almost every time.

A combination of accidents and violations will also be considered legitimate cause for cancellation. Two “at fault” accidents within a 36 month period will also be upheld by the insurance department in the case of cancellation. Fortunately, most companies will take into account the severity of the two accidents before they decide if they will cancel your insurance. It’s times like these when a good agent will go to the plate for you and help you keep your insurance.

Paying your bill on time is another major reason for many cancellations and is perfectly legal for any insurance company to enforce. Be sure to get that bill paid at least a day or more before the due date to avoid any confusion of cancellation of your insurance.

Remember, if you get a cancellation notice and are unable to get satisfaction from your agent, you can appeal to the state insurance department. In writing, you need to submit a request for a review within 30 days of your cancellation.
